CPRIT Grants Management System

This award mechanism aims to finance initiatives that will aid in the dissemination and implementation of successful CPRIT-funded evidence-based cancer prevention and control activities throughout Texas. Based on the outcomes of the CPRIT-funded intervention, the proposed project should be able to create one or more “products.” The proposed initiative should also identify and help others in preparing for intervention implementation and/or grant financing.

Maximum award: $450,000; maximum duration: 36 months

This reward mechanism is focused on enhancing the adoption of evidence-based solutions to ensure that all Texans benefit from the current cancer prevention knowledge. The goal of CPRIT is to fund multilevel treatments to reduce cancer risk, disease burden, and inequities. Tobacco use, obesity, physical inactivity, poor eating, alcohol use, sun exposure, HPV vaccine, Hepatitis B vaccination, and environmental/ occupational cancer exposures are all modifiable risk behaviors. Applications should also evaluate and address societal causes of cancer burden and inequities (e.g., cultural factors, unmet needs, access barriers). Interventions and communications should be tailored to the specific needs of the population to be served.

Maximum award: $1 million for new projects and $2.5 million for expanded projects; maximum duration: 60 months

This award mechanism aims to support the delivery of evidence-based clinical services to screen for cancer and pre-cancer in underserved populations that lack adequate access to cancer early detection interventions and health care by bringing together networks of public health and community partners to carry out programs tailored to their communities. Projects should identify diseases that are the most burdensome in the community, have nationally recommended screening procedures, and screen for these cancers using evidence-based methodologies.

Maximum award: $1 million for new projects and $2.5 million for expanded projects; maximum duration: 60 months

Supports applications for novel research projects that address critically relevant questions about the causes, prevention, and/or treatment of cancer. Laboratory research, translational studies, and/or clinical investigations are all areas of interest. Competitive renewal applications are being accepted.

Annual award of up to $350,000 Exceptions are allowed if exceedingly well warranted; the maximum term is three years.

Supports submissions for novel research initiatives that address concerns about the origins, prevention, progression, detection, or treatment of cancer in children and adolescents. All research, whether laboratory, clinical, or population-based, are accepted. CPRIT anticipates that the research will lower the incidence, morbidity, and death from cancer in children and/or adolescents in the short and long term. Competitive renewal applications are being accepted.

Annual award of up to $350,000 Applicants that want to perform a clinical study as part of the project may request a total expenditure of up to $500,000. Exceptions are possible if exceedingly well warranted; the maximum period is four years.

Supports applications that propose innovative cancer clinical studies that are hypothesis driven and involve patients enrolled prospectively on a clinical trial. Areas of interest include clinical studies of new or repurposed drugs, hormonal therapies, immune therapies, surgery, radiation therapy, stem cell transplantation, combinations of interventions, or therapeutic devices. Clinical trial must be planned to begin when contract is awarded.

Supports applications for innovative mathematical and/or computational research projects that address questions that will advance current knowledge in the areas of (a) mechanisms that link altered gene expression and downstream molecular mechanisms to functional cancer phenotypes and/or (b) mechanisms that link tumor morphology to functional cancer phenotypes and/or mechanisms that link treatment sequence and combination to evolving functional cancer phenotypes (that emerge as a result of treatment selection).

Award: Up to $400,000 in total costs per year for a period of up to three years. Exceptions are allowed if they are exceedingly well warranted.

Applications that propose clinical and population-based projects to create effective prevention and early detection strategies to minimize cancer risk, mortality, and morbidity among Texans are encouraged to apply. Such research collaborations with current CPRIT Prevention Program winners, such as the CPRIT-funded Texas Collaborative Center for Hepatocellular Cancer, are strongly welcomed.

Annual salary: up to $400,000 Exceptions are possible if exceedingly well justified; the maximum term is five years.

Solicits submissions to support cancer research at institutions in Texas that have previously received low levels of peer-reviewed cancer research funding.
