The year 2022 has another great opportunity for people that are vast and willing to contribute their quota towards the adoption of sustainable pest management. Some government agencies are already calling for applicants to apply for various grants for pest management schemes which are designed to foster state-wide adoption of integrated pest management as against the usual traditional pest control. The Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is pleased to announce enhancements for the 2022 Alliance and Research Grants Programs!
The 2022 Alliance and Research Grants Programs include an expanded funding commitment to support the state’s goal of transitioning to system-wide adoption of sustainable pest management.
- The 2022 Alliance Grants Program will offer projects with budgets ranging from $50,000 to $1.8 million that promote or increase the implementation, expansion, and/or adoption of effective and proven integrated pest management system or procedures.
- On the other hand, the 2022 Research Grants Program will award projects with budgets ranging from $50,000 to $3.75 million that develop pest management practices that reduce the impacts on public health and the environment of pesticides of high regulatory concern and/or are considered to be high-risk, through the development and enhancement of IPM systems.
In addition to expanded funding, the 2022 Grants Programs will feature two additional important changes: an extended solicitation period and a streamlined application process consisting of a Proposal Application only (instead of the previous Concept Application and Proposal Application process).

What Does the Grant Entails?
The Department of Pesticide Regulation’s (DPR’s) Pest Management Grants Program has two grant opportunities: The Alliance Grants Program and the Research Grants Program.
When the applications are submitted, it is to be reviewed and ranked by DPR staff and the Pest Management Advisory Committee (PMAC). PMAC is a stakeholders group that was founded in 1992 to assist DPR in identifying and promoting integrated pest management (IPM) practices that reduce the risk associated with the use of pesticides to public health and environment. Funding recommendations are provided to DPR’s Director who determines which applications will be considered.

Other Funding Opportunities: In partnership with DPR and other state grant making agencies, the California State Library has launched the California Grants Portal , a central hub for grant seekers to locate all State grant and loan opportunities. The Grants Portal offers another medium for applicants to find additional information on DPR’s Grant programs, as well as other relevant State grant and loan opportunities.
- Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP):
The United States Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce renewed commitment to working with the agricultural community as a partner in the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP). The agency seeks to support the agricultural community by reinstating PESP grants for projects that explore innovative practices, technologies, education, and non-regulatory solutions that promote the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM).
IPM focuses on pest prevention and only using pesticides as needed unlike the traditional pest control that involves the routine application of pesticides. This process will offer a more effective, environmentally sensitive approach that combines biological, cultural, physical, and chemical tools to minimize risks associated with pests and pesticides. Furthermore, IPM has the possibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
In 2022, EPA expects to award approximately $1 million through the PESP grant initiative. EPA will support 10 projects – one from each EPA region.
Who can apply for this grant?
District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, any territory or possession of the United States, any agency or instrumentality of a State including State universities, and all Federally recognized Native American Tribes can apply for this grant opportunity.
